Miami Hurricanes News: Baseball wins series, Women's hoops gets big win
The Miami Hurricanes won their second straight series with a 22-5 win over Long Island on Sunday. Miami needed a seven-run eighth inning to win the series opener 9-3 on Friday night. Long Island scored a run in the eighth inning and two in the ninth to win game two 4-2 on Saturday night.
Jason Torres had three hits in four at-bats with two runs scored and two RBIs in the series opener on Friday night. Freshman Daniel Cuvet had three hits and scored three runs in Friday's win. Gage Ziehl started on Friday night and allowed three runs in seven innings. Nick Robert pitched two hitless and scoreless innings for the win in relief.
Miami had a run in the first inning to take the lead on Saturday night. Long Island matched Miami with a single run in the fourth. Miami surged back in front in the fifth inning before the late rally by LIU. Dorian Gonzalez had two of the seven Miami hits and Cuvet homered in the loss on Saturday. Miami allowed two LIU home runs.
A HR in the eighth and one in the ninth put LIU ahead on Saturday before a sacrifice fly gave the Sharks a 4-2 cushion. Miami did not score in the bottom of the ninth. Rafe Schlesinger pitched six innings, allowing six hits with seven strikeouts before the bullpen failed him.
Miami had a dominant offensive performance on Sunday. The Hurricanes had at least five runs in four different innings. After scoring one in the first, Miami added five runs each in the third and fourth innings and six in the fifth to lead 17-1 after five. Miami tacked on another five spot in the seventh inning.
Seven Hurricanes had multiple hit games and three had at least three hits. Miami hit eight HRs on Sunday, including four in the third inning. Leadoff hitter Edgardo Villegas had four hits in five at-bats with three runs scored. Five Hurricanes had multiple RBIs, including three with at least four runs driven in.
Gonzalez led Miami with five RBIs on Sunday. Lorenzo Carrier and Gonzalez each hit grand slams on Sunday. Miami improved to 5-2 with the win. Central Florida beat Miami 4-3 on Wednesday. Miami hosts Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday and Florida travels to Coral Gables next weekend for a big three-game series.
The Miami Women's basketball team continued their push towards the NCAA Tournament with a critical 56-50 win at Clemson. Miami held on late to win after taking a 43-33 lead after three quarters. The Hurricanes closed the game on a 9-2 run after Clemson rallied in the fourth quarter to take the lead.
Jasmyn Roberts had a big game for Miami. Roberts had nearly half of Miami's points with a 26-point outing. Jada Patrick was the only other Hurricane in double figures with 11 points. Clemson and Miami traded control over the four quarters. Ultimately, the difference was Miami outscoring Clemson 20-10 in the third quarter.
Amari Robinson led Clemson with 20 points on Senior Day and Dayshawn Harris scored 16. Shayeann Day-Wilson, who struggled on Sunday, made a critical three-point shot with 22 seconds left to extend the Miami lead to 54-48. Day-Wilson finished 1-11 from the floor. Miami needed the win after a 77-60 loss at Virginia on Thursday.
Miami finishes the regular season with home games on Thursday versus Pittsburgh and next Sunday versus Georgia Tech. The ACC Women's Basketball Tournament is March 6 through the 10 in Greensboro. Miami is currently 17-10 overall and 7-9 in the ACC and in ninth place in the conference.
