Miami kicker Andres Borregales was named to the Groza Award preseason watch list on Friday. Borregales has been a semifinalist for the Groza aw289 card in each of the last two seasons. Borreagales has made 83.6 percent of his field goals and 121 out of 122 extra points during his college career for 289 career points.
Borregales needs 21 field goals and 104 points to tie Michael Badgley for the Miami career records. In 2023 Borregales was named first-team All-ACC after making 44 out of his 45 extra point attempts and 22 out of 26 field goal attempts for a career-high 110 points. Borregales earned preseason first-team All-ACC on Thursday.
Borregales' brother Jose is the only Miami player to earn the Groza Award after the 2000 season. Jose made 20 of 22 field goals and all 37 extra points for 97 points in his Groza Award season when he was also named consensus first-team All-American.
The Groza Award will announce 20 semifinalists on November 19. Three finalists for the Groza Award will be announced on November 26. The Groza Award winner will be announced on December 12 during the Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
Borregales will not have to travel far if he is a Groza Award finalist. The 33rd Groza Award finalists will be honored in West Palm Beach with a gala awards banquet on December 9. Borregales is the seventh Miami football player chosen to a preseason award watch list.
Borreagales has a chance to score a lot of points in November. Miami plays versus Duke, at Georgia Tech, versus Wake Forest and at Syracuse to close the season. October is the most challenging part of Miami's schedule. Miami plays at California and Louisville and hosts Florida State in October.
Defensive back Jaden Harris was named to the Wuerffel Trophy on Thursday, earlier this week running back Damien Martinez, quarterback Cam Ward and wide receiver Xavier Restrepo were named to the Maxwell Award watch list, linebacker Francisco Mauigoa to the Nagurski Award and offensive tackle Jalen Rivers to the Outland Trophy.
