Miami will begin looking at other QB options with Cam Ward entering draft
The Miami football team will have to look at alternative quarterbacks after potential Washington State transfer Cam Ward decided to enter the 2024 NFL Draft instead of matriculating with the Hurricanes. Ward will not immediately sign with an agent per Pete Thamel of ESPN.
Quarterbacks are quickly making decisions for the 2024 season. K.J. Jefferson of Arkansas announced his transfer to Central Florida on Monday. Will Howard of Kansas State was the only other transfer QB to visit Miami since the end of the 2023 season. Howard also visited USC and has been linked to Ohio State,
Thamel also reported on Monday that Miami was interacting with Jefferson (obviously before he committed to UCF) and Malachi Nelson of USC. Miami had reportedly wanted an experienced transfer QB. Nelson was a 2023 signee with USC. Nelson completed one pass in three attempts while playing one game in 2023,
Ward entered the transfer portal for the second time in three seasons. Before playing the last two seasons at Washington State, Ward was at FCS Incarnate Word. Ward posted a five second video on social media announcing his declaration for the 2024 NFL Draft.
Ward has until January 15 to make his final decision for the 2024 NFL Draft. Kyle Bonagura of ESPN reported that Ward's father Calvin stated Cam will begin training for the NFL Draft on Tuesday. In addition to Miami, Ward also visited Florida State. The decision by Ward will send domino effects throughout college football.
Shortly after the decision by Ward, D.J. Uiagalelei committed to Florida State from Oregon State. Ohio State is Miami's biggest competition for a transfer QB. Howard has been linked to Ohio State. Mario Cristobal and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson have to evaluate what's next for Miami at QB with Ward entering the NFL Draft.
