Miami won game over South Florida with long scoring drives
Miami had seven drives of at least 75 yards in their 50-15 win at South Florida on Saturday. The Hurricanes were efficient and explosive in their win over the Bulls. Miami began the game with a seven-play 75-yard drive in 3:29 that culminated with a two-yard Damien Martinez touchdown run.
The next three drives were a South Florida field goal, a Miami turnover and a Bulls TD to take a 9-7 lead after the extra point was blocked. Miami answered with an eight-play, 90-yard drive that ended with a Ward to Isaiah Horton six-yard TD pass to put Miami back in front 14-9.
South Florida had two field goal drives bracketing a Miami punt to regain the lead for the last time at 15-14. The drive that gave South Florida the lead was 19 plays, 66 yards in 8:30. The difference in the first half was Miami forcing four South Florida first half field goal attempts. South Florida was three for four on field goal attempts.
Miami got the ball at their own 20-yard line with 2:36 left in the first half. Martinez gained four yards on first down. Ward connected with wide receiver Sam Brown down the left sideline for a 76-yard TD with 1:56 left in the first half to extend its lead to 22-15. The Brown TD began a 36-point run to end the game.
South Florida had a seven-play, 62-yard drive in 1:38 that ended with a missed field goal. The missed field goal by Brown added to Miami's momentum entering halftime. Miami seized control of the game after forcing a South Florida punt on the first possession of the second half.
Miami had a 12-play, 80-yard scoring drive in 5:51 on their first possession of the second half. A one-yard Martinez run gave Miami a 29-15 lead. After forcing another South Florida punt, Miami went seven plays, 80 yards, in 2:53 with another one-yard Martinez run, almost putting the game away to lead 36-15.
Miami wasn't done. On the next South Florida drive, Mishael Powell had an end zone interception to get the ball at their own 20. Miami went 10 plays, 80 yards in 5:36 with Xavier Restrepo catching a five-yard TD pass from Ward to extend the lead to 43-15. After forcing another punt, Miami added one more long drive.
The final drive was three plays, 96 yards in 1:39. True freshman running back Jordan Lyle finished the final scoring drive for Miami with a program-record 91-yard TD drive in the fourth quarter. Lyle finished with six carries for 104 yards rushing. Miami turning long fields into points was one of the biggest differences in beating South Florida.
