The Hurricanes are in the top five of the "College Football Power Rankings: Tennessee, Miami surge into top five after top teams struggle in Week 2." Miami zoomed seven spots from 12th to fifth. Struggles by Alabama, Oregon and Penn State plus Notre Dame's loss helped Miami move up.

Miami also passed Mississippi and Utah to move into the top five. Everything has clicked for Miami through the first two weeks. Miami has been stout defensively and has one of the most explosive offenses nationally. Cam Ward has elevated the entire team.

The Hurricanes have an advantageous scheduling remaining to fulfill their status as the early season favorite in the ACC. Louisville who is 20th and Syracuse who is 22nd are the only teams on the 2024 Miami schedule currently in the National CBS Sports Power Rankings.

Brandon Marcello creates the CBS Sports Power Rankings and writes a summary for all 25 teams. Marcello is much higher on Miami than the Associated Press Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Polls who have the Hurricanes at 10th and 12th. Marcello summarized the start of the season for Miami.

"All aboard the Cane Train. For all the worries about Cam Ward's erratic play at Washington State last season, it's becoming clearer by the week that it was because of the lack of talent around him. He's the best quarterback in Florida - and maybe the country. Ward enters Week 3 as the first Miami QB since 2009 to start a season with 600 yards through two games."

Ward is currently second in the Heisman Trophy odds behind Quinn Ewers of Texas at +750 per FanDuel. Ward is fifth nationally averaging 344.5 passing yards per game, eighth completing 75.4 percent of his passes and averaging 11.3 yards per attempt and ninth with a 199.47 passer rating.

Ward and Miami have been performing at a higher level since teaming up. Miami will wrap up its non-conference schedule by hosting Ball State on Saturday and playing at South Florida on September 21. South Florida might present a challenge, as they were only trailing Alabama 14-13 after three quarters before ultimately losing 42-16 on Saturday.
