National website picks Miami football 2nd in ACC with surprising record
Grant Hughes of 247 Sports projects the Miami football team to finish second in the ACC with an 11-1 record in 2024. An 11-1 regular season would be the best by Miami since finishing 12-0 in the 2022 regular season. The only loss Hughes projects from Miami in the regular season is to Florida State on October 26.
Miami has only one 10-win season in the last 20 years. The Hurricanes finished 10-3 in 2017. That was the only ACC Championship game appearance for the Hurricanes in program history. Miami won its only outright ACC Coastal Division Championship in 2017. Divisions were abolished in the ACC after the 2002 season.
Miami returns six starters on offense and four on defense from the regular season-ending win over Boston College. Miami has filled in most of the remaining 12 projected 2024 starters through the transfer portal led by quarterback Cam Ward, running back Damien Martinez and center Zach Carpenter.
Ward is the foundation Miami will build its 2024 season around. The addition of Ward to the Miami roster helped land Houston wide receiver Sam Brown through the transfer portal and Martinez from Oregon State. Miami projects to have an elite offense in 2024.
"Miami has been fool's gold the past few seasons. Is this the year the Hurricanes finally break out? Mario Cristobal and Co. finished 7-6 last fall but landed one of the transfer portal's top quarterbacks in former Washington State star Cameron Ward. "
- Grant Hughes, 247Sports
Ward led all returning QBs in college football in 2023 with 311.1 passing yards per game. The three QBs ahead of Ward in 2023, Michael Penix of Washington, Bo Nix of Oregon and Jayden Daniels of LSU were all Heisman Trophy Finalists (Daniels won) and 2024 NFL first-round draft picks.
Ward transferred to Miami to increase his stock in the 2025 NFL Draft. If Miami finishes 11-1 in 2024, it will be largely due to Ward's success. Mario Cristobal has put together an elite roster. Miami must live up to the talent it has in 2024. The Hurricanes have significantly underachieved in the first two seasons under Cristobal.
