Previewing Miami football June 7 weekend defensive official visitors

The Miami football program will host seven 2025 defensive prospects during the second weekend of official visitors per the 247Sports database.

The June 7 weekend visitors on defense will be led by five-star defensive lineman Elijah Griffin per the 247Sports database. In addition to Griffin Miami is hosting two four-star defensive prospects and four three-stars. Linebacker Elijah Melendez who is taking his official visit the weekend of June 21 is the only 2025 Miami defensive commit.

Linebackers Gavin Nix and Jadon Perlotte are the four-star prospects taking official visits to Miami this weekend. Defensive linemen Walter Mathis and Derry Norris and cornerbacks Mark Manfred, and Timothy Merritt are the three-star prospects in Coral Gables this weekend.

Norris is the only defensive prospect taking an official visit with Miami this weekend that is trending to the Hurricanes. Perlotte is the only defensive official visitor to Miami this weekend committed to another program. Perlotte is currently committed to Georgia.

Griffin is also trending to Georgia. The Bulldogs are projected with a 95.3 percent chance for a commitment, per the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. How the weekend goes for Griffin in Coral Gables will be one of the storylines of the weekend. Miami laid the foundation for an elite DL in the 2024 class.

In addition to the projection of Griffin to Georgia by On3, 247Sports has three crystal balls projecting him to the Bulldogs. This weekend is critical for Miami to have any chance of moving those projections. Griffin is the fourth-ranked player in the 2025 class, the top DL and the top recruit in Georgia.

Perlotte took an official visit to Alabama during the weekend of May 31, with Miami, Auburn, Tennessee and Georgia upcoming. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has Perlotte flipping from Georgia to Florida State. Per his 247Sports scouting report, Perlotte projects as a hybrid LB/safety in college.

Nix has a tight recruitment with Florida, Florida State and Miami competing for Nix, Florida has a 28.5 percent chance for a Nix commitment, FSU at 22.2 percent and Miami at 16.7 percent. After Miami, Nix will take an official visit to Oregon next weekend and Florida State the weekend of June 21.

Clemson with a 34.4 percent chance for a commitment per On3 and Auburn at 30.1 percent are the prohibitive favorites for Mathis. Mathis has played edge rusher and tackle in high school with 145 career tackles, 47.0 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks and 54.0 quarterback hurries.

Merritt will be in Coral Gables for the first time with his official visit to Miami this weekend. At 6'2 and 180 pounds, Merrit is a CB who has exceptional length. Tennessee currently leads for Merritt with a 36.7 percent chance for a commitment per On3. Arkansas is second at 23.8 percent followed by Alabama at 11.3 percent.

Manfred is also 6'2 and 170 pounds. Adding Manfred and Merritt in the 2024 class would provide Miami with excellent size at both outside CBs. Mississippi is currently the prohibitive leader for Manfred with a 35.1 percent chance for a commitment. Everyone else is below 3.0 percent.

Miami is in a tight recruitment for Norris with Georgia Tech and Minnesota. Miami is the leader with a 32.4 percent chance for a Norris commitment, followed by Georgia Tech at 28.3 percent and Minnesota at 24.3. Norris had 63 tackles, 12.5 TFLs and 7.0 sacks as a junior in 2023.

This weekend doesn't have the same level of talent Miami hosted last week when official visits commenced this summer. The is when will Miami begin to start adding to its 2025 class of six current commits. It is too early to be concerned, but Miami needs to start adding to its 2025 class in the next few weeks.
