Adam Gorney, Rivals.Com National Recruiting Director named Cam Ward the second-best transfer quarterback behind Julian Sayin of Ohio State. Sayin signed with Alabama in the 2024 class and transferred in January following the retirement of Nick Saban.

Ward has been on numerous transfer lists since withdrawing from the NFL Draft and announcing he was transferring from Washington State to Miami in January. Rivals ranks Ward as the sixth-best transfer and top one in the ACC. By the end of the 2024 season, Ward should be the best transfer QB.

Per Ourlads, Sayin projects as the third-team QB for Ohio State. Will Howard, who transferred from Kansas State, is the projected starting QB for Ohio State. Devin Brown, who returns for the Buckeyes, is the projected second-team QB. Sayin will likely sit for a year before projecting to become the starting QB in 2025.

The transfer by Ward to Miami has helped the Hurricanes add other high profile transfers to its roster. Running back Damien Martinez and wide receiver Sam Brown transferred to Miami during the spring portal window influenced by the opportunity to play with Ward.

"2. CAMERON WARD, Miami

Ward turned down the NFL and a loaded first-round quarterback class in the draft for a much weaker one in 2025, and he transferred from Washington State for one more season at Miami.

Starting his career at Incarnate Word and then transferring to play for the Cougars, Ward threw for nearly 7,000 yards with 48 touchdowns the last two seasons in Pullman and he also rushed for 13 scores.

Ward could absolutely be the key piece the Hurricanes need after they lost six of their last nine last season."

Miami is building its 2024 offense around Ward. Brown and Martinez add key players to the roster. Xavier Restepo and Jacolby George return as Miami's leading receivers. Restrepo and George will provide Ward with multiple options in the passing game. Ward's performance in 2024 is critical for his 2024 Draft stock.

Ward is 106th on the 2025 Pro Football Focus NFL Draft big board. That projects as a late third or early fourth-round selection, depending on compensatory picks. Ward should be able to match his average numbers at Washington State for Miami during the 2023 season.
