The Miami football team is in a position to contend in the updated CBS Sports ACC Power Rankings.
Chip Patterson of CBS Sports published the updated "ACC post-spring power rankings: Florida State edges Clemson for No. 1, Miami in position to contend." Clemson, Florida State and the Miami football program have been the projected top three 2024 teams throughout most of the offseason.
Patterson discussed the significant transfer additions Miami has made in the portal this spring. Since April 27, Miami has added two transfer starters on offense and potentially three on defense. Clemson and Florida State are the co-favorites to win the ACC and Miami is third.
Miami signed the sixth-ranked 2024 recruiting class and is 12th in the transfer portal rankings. As many as 10 or 11 transfers could start for Miami in 2024. Mario Cristobal and his staff have an exceptional job adding elite talent through the 2024 transfer portal.
Miami returns six starters on offense and four on defense from the final 2023 regular season game at Boston College. Isaiah Horton who started versus BC will likely back up recent transfer addition Sam Brown at WR. Patterson summarized the 2024 outlook and transfer additions for Miami in 2024.
"3) Miami (Fla.)
- Chip Patterson, CBS Sports
Ah yes, the age-old rivalry between Miami football and ACC title expectations. The Hurricanes were picked to win the Coastal five times between 2013-2022 yet pulled it off just once (2017). After a busy offseason of portal work, we're looking to Mario Cristobal's group as the next-best option between conference heavyweights Florida State and Clemson. Make no mistake, Miami has the offensive firepower to do it as they just brought in Damien Martinez from the transfer portal to bolster the running back position and add strength to the Cam Ward-led offense. Tightening things up on defense is the burning question, especially after some key losses in the secondary from last season's unit."
Miami hosts Florida State on October 26 and does not play Clemson in 2024. The toughest ACC game for Miami projects to be at Louisville on October 19. If Miami splits with the Cardinals and Seminoles, they will be in an excellent position to earn a berth in the ACC Championship Game.
Miami plays at California, Georgia Tech and Syracuse in its other ACC road games. Miami hosts Virginia Tech, Duke and Wake Forest in their other three ACC home games. Miami is likely to be favored in every game this season except at Florida to open the season on August 31, at Louisville and versus FSU.
In addition to not playing Clemson in 2024, Miami also avoids North Carolina and North Carolina State who also project to be contenders this season. The schedule sets up for Miami to compete for an ACC Championship game berth. As Patterson states, Miami has to live up to its title expectations.
