Third quarter has become pivotal for Miami during 2024 season

Miami has used dominant third quarters this season to take command of games.

Miami has outscored 2024 opponents 59-3 during the third quarter. The Hurricanes began their third-quarter dominance in the season opener by stretching a 24-10 halftime lead versus Florida to 38-10 at the end of 45 minutes with a 14-0 advantage. Miami eventually won 41-17.

In week two Miami turned a 25-6 halftime lead over Florida A&M to a 46-9 edge after three quarters with a 21-3 advantage. Miami beat FAMU 56-9. Miami extended a 31-0 halftime lead over Ball State to a 41-0 advantage after three quarters. The Hurricanes finished off the Cardinals with a 21-0 fourth quarter to win 62-0.

The third quarter proved equally critical for Miami at South Florida on Saturday night. Miami outscored South Florida 14-0 in the third quarter to extend its 22-15 halftime lead to 36-15 after three quarters. Miami outscored South Florida 14--0 in the fourth quarter on their way to a 50-14 win.

In the third quarter in 2024, Miami outgained Florida 146-42, had a 200-19 edge over Florida A&M, had a 168-19 advantage over Ball State and 153-92 ahead of South Florida. Miami was even more dominant in the fourth quarter over South Florida. The Hurricanes outgained the Bulls 185 to 51 in the final 15 minutes.

Jordan Lyle had almost half of the Miami offense on one play with a program-record 91-yard touchdown run for the final score of the night. Lyle finished six carries for 104 yards and the one score. Cam Ward completed 24 passes in 34 attempts for 404 yards, three TDs and one interception.

Ward has over 300 yards and three touchdown passes in each game this season. Ward was over 100 yards after three quarters with 389 as Miami led 36-15. In the third quarter, Ward completed eight passes in 11 attempts for 125 yards. Miami will begin ACC play on Friday versus Virginia Tech.
