A busy day for the Miami football program continued when defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae accepted the same position with the Buffalo Bills. Earlier Wednesday, reports emerged that Miami will hire Matt Merritt as the running backs coach and that Alonzo Highsmith is leaving for the New England Patriots.
Addae was the sole leftover on defense from Mario Cristobal's inaugural 2022 staff. Addae spent two seasons with Miami. The Hurricanes hired Addae from Georgia where he spent one season. Addae has also been on the staffs at Arizona, Cincinnati, Michigan, Minnesota and West Virginia.
In his two seasons with Miami, Addae mentored cornerbacks, Tyrique Stevenson who was a second-round pick by the Chicago Bears in the 2023 NFL Draft and D.J. Ivey who was taken in the seventh round by the Cincinnati Bengals. Safeties Kamren Kinchens and James Williams are projected to be selected in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Addae was the 19th-best recruiter in the ACC and 99th nationally per the 247Sports rankings in 2024. Addae is credited with Miami signing cornerbacks Damari Brown, Dematrius Freeney, Romanus Freqerique and Robert Stafford, plus safeties, Dylan Day, Zaquan Patterson and Isaiah Thomas.
Addae also recruited Miami CB Darryl Porter Jr. and defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor to West Virginia before they transferred and joined the Hurricanes. Addae played at West Virginia from 2001-2005. Buffalo is providing Addae with his first opportunity to coach in the NFL after spending the last 17 years in college.
Addae was on the practice squads of the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006. West Virginia hired Addae for his first position as a graduate assistant in 2007 under Rich Rodriguez. Addae also spent four seasons on Rodriguez's staff at Arizona. Addae was also the co-defensive coordinator at West Virginia in 2020.
Expect the replacement for Addae at Miami to be outside the box. Mario Cristobal keep his information tight. Merrill being hired as the new RB's coach was not mentioned by anyone. Multiple candidates will be speculated on as the replacement for Addae.
