Tyler Baron named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week
Miami edge rusher Tyler Baron had five tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and three sacks as Miami beat Florida A&M 56-9 on Saturday. The performance by Baron earned him the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week. Baron was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week with three tackles, 2.5 TFL and 2.0 sacks for Tennessee in 2023.
Baron has All-American numbers through the first two games. With outstanding performances versus Florida and FAMU, Baron is second nationally with 5.5 tackles for loss and 4.0 sacks. Pro Football Focus named Baron to their National Team of the Week for his performance versus FAMU.
Baron has had to assume the mantle as the elite Miami edge rusher early in his Hurricanes' tenure with Rueben Bain injured on the first series of the season versus Florida. The performance by Baron through the first two weeks has exceeded expectations. Baron is clearly an elite player on his own.
Baron is on pace to eclipse his career highs of 30 tackles in 2021 and 10.5 TFLs and 6.0 sacks in 2023. The Miami sacks record of 17 set by Daniel Stubbs in 1986 could be within reach for Baron. With Bain out, Miami still has a good pair of edge rushers with Marshall transfer Elijah Alston also playing well.
"DEFENSIVE LINEMAN β Tyler Baron, Miami, DL, Knoxville, Tennessee
-Β ACC
In just 27 snaps, Baron became the eighth Hurricane to mount three sacks in a game over the last 20 years. The sixth-year defensive linemen finished with a co-team-best five tackles, including a 3.5 tackles-for-loss. (Baron) helped the Miami defense limit Florida A&M to just 194 yards of total offense, including just 52 rushing yards."
The last Miami edge rusher to have a performance like Baron on Saturday was Gregory Rousseau versus Florida State in 2019. Rousseau had eight tackles, five tackles for loss and four sacks as Miami defeated Florida State 27-10 in Tallahassee.
Baron earned an ACC positional Player of the Week after offensive lineman Zach Carpenter, defensive back Jaden Harris, and quarterback Cam Ward earned the awards following the win over Florida in week one. Miami hosts Ball State on Saturday with a 3:30 PM Eastern Time kickoff.
