In their opening game of ACC play, the Miami Hurricanes were expected to win big. They were three-score favorites at home against the Virginia Tech Hokies and they nearly lost, barely squeaking out a 38-34 win.

Miami got some aid from the refs, who controversially overturned a would-be Hail Mary touchdown on the game's final play. That would've given Virginia Tech the win. But as Mario Cristobal said after the game:

Here's how Miami can take care of future opponents and leave the rest of their games out of the hands of the officials.

Limit turnovers

"You don't leave a game like this in the hands of the officials because you might be disappointed."

Mario Cristobal

This was an area of little to no concern for Miami over the first four games of the season. However, Virginia Tech did a fantastic job of taking the ball away from Miami's high-powered offense. The first turnover of the game was more on Cam Ward than the Hokies defense.

While the d-line did provide pressure, Ward made a rare mistake while trying to make a play, coughing up the ball within the first minute of the game and giving Virginia Tech excellent field position. This led directly to a Hokies touchdown and unnecessarily put Miami in an early 7-0 hole.
