What can Miami learn from their near loss against Virginia Tech?

The Hurricanes faced their first real test of the year last Friday and nearly came out with a loss. Here's how they can do better going forward.

Even Bhayshul Tuten, Virginia Tech's star running back, experienced a ton of success against Miami's defense with tosses to the outside.

With Francis Mauigoa known as one of the country's best leading blockers, stud right guard Anez Cooper next to him, and Jalen Rivers set to be back soon to anchor the left side of the line, there's no reason Shannon Dawson shouldn't experiment more with his run game strategy.

Tighten up the secondary

There were too many plays against Virginia Tech where the Miami defensive line got pressure, Kyron Drones escaped from the pocket and then delivered a strike downfield. He did so twice for touchdowns. Both times happened on third down, with a receiver wide open in the end zone on each play.

Overall, Miami's secondary hasn't been awful this year. After Week 5, they rank 28th in the country allowing 172 passing yards per game. True freshman OJ Frederique has especially been a pleasant surprise.
