Safety Kamren Kinchens is projected to be the first Miami football player taken by Chris Trapasso in his "2024 NFL Mock Draft for Day 2: Spencer Rattler next QB off the board, plus WRs galore during Rounds 2 and 3 published early on Friday morning.

Consensus NFL Mock Drafts project Kinchens between the third and fourth rounds. Trapasso projects Kinchens 67th overall as the third pick in the third round to the Washington Commanders. Washington would select Kinchens 20 years after drafting late Miami legend Sean Taylor.

Kinchens finished his Miami career with 162 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, two forced fumbles, 26 pass breakups, 11 interceptions and two returned for touchdowns. The 11 interceptions by Kinchens tie Bryan Ferguson (1975-77) and Roland Smith (1987-90) for eighth in Miami program history.

The Pro Football Network also projects Kinchens to Washington with the 67th pick. Kinchens was frequently projected as a first-round pick until his poor performance at the NFL Combine. The production for Kinchens as a sophomore and junior were All-American caliber. Kinchens earned first-team All-American in 2022.

"Once considered a fringe first-rounder, Kamren Kinchens saw his stock drop last season at Miami. He’s still highly athletic and has the tools to play early and often in the NFL."

Will, Pro Football Network.

Washington finished 4-13 in 2023. Kamren Curl who started 16 games for Washington in 2023 was named the Commanders' most important defensive player by Pro Football Focus. Percy Butler was Washington's other primary safety with 13 starts in 15 games. Butler had 64 tackles and allowed 14 completions on 25 targets in 2023.

Kinchens showed he was a quick learner during his freshman season with Miami in 2021. Kinchens played in all 12 games for Miami as a true freshman in 2021 and started the final five. Whoever drafts Kinchens will have a high-IQ player in their secondary.

Kinchens, the 320th-ranked player, 21st safety and 48th recruit in Florida in the 2021 class, has far exceeded his high school ranking. Despite the poor NFL Combine numbers, Kinchens is an undervalued player. Kinchens was a leader of the Miami defense throughout his Miami career.
