Miami is on the verge of a hot run in recruiting. Mario Cristobal and staff have been setting up major visit weekends with some of the top targets in this cycle and once the first big commitment comes, there will be many more to follow.Â
There's a good chance that 4-star safety KJ Caldwell could be the guy that starts the run of commitments for the Hurricanes. The Atlanta-area defensive back has an official visit scheduled to Miami for June 12, but Caldwell is scheduled to announce his decisions sooner than that. With the Hurricanes a clear favorite in the eyes of many, multiple On3/Rivals writers are predicting that Caldwell will end up with the Hurricanes.

The network's Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons and On3/Rivals Miami insider EJ Holland, have both logged in predictions for Caldwell to commit to Miami when he makes his announcement on April 3. Simmons has always been pretty in tune with the top prospects around Atlanta and the state of Georgia, so when he puts in a prediction for a player from that area, there's likely some fire behind that smoke.
Caldwell will be in Coral Gables at the end of March to take in some spring practices, and it wouldn't surprise me if the Hurricanes staff pushed for at least a silent commitment during that trip. He has been on campus several times and was in attendance for the Notre Dame game to open the 2025 season.
It was thought that Miami's biggest competition for Caldwell would come from a few SEC programs, specifically Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Georgia, but so far the Hurricanes have stayed in the lead for the blue-chip safety and a spring visit could be what seals the deal.
Miami has been stuck on four commitments in the 2027 class for several months, but that is expected to change significantly with big recruiting visits scheduled for the spring and into the summer. The Hurricanes continue to be a heavy lean for many top targets, including Caldwell.Â
