Miami fell to 4-11 overall and 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 80-65 loss to Florida State on Wednesday night. The ESPN Basketball Power Index projects Miami to finish the season with 10.5 wins and 20.5 losses overall and a 6.5-13.5 record in the ACC. TeamRankings.Com predicts Miami 9.6-21.4 overall and 5.6-14.4 in the ACC.
Miami currently ranks 84th in the BPI, 130th in KenPom and 199th in the NCAA Net Ratings after being 181st before losing to Florida State and 291st in the TeamRankings RPI. The variances between the different sites depend on the metrics used for each site. Miami is 0-9 versus the Net Ratings quadrant one teams this season.
The BPI has favored Miami in many games this season. Miami's 4-11 record versus the point spread in the 2024-25 season matches their overall record. After winning outright and against the spread in the first three games of the year, Miami has lost four in a row straight up and against the spread.
Miami Hurricanes basketball is going through a nightmare season
The BPI gave Miami a 66.7 percent chance to defeat Florida State. Amazingly the BPI projects Miami with a 55.9 percent chance to defeat Wake Forest on Saturday in Coral Gables. If Miami doesn't beat Wake Forest, the losing streak would grow to nine games as projected by the BPI.
Miami's lack of defense has been its biggest downfall this season. The Hurricanes are 15th in the ACC allowing 75.5 points per game, last allowing opponents to shoot 47.3 percent from the floor and 37.7 percent on 3-point attempts, 16th averaging 23.7 defensive rebounds per game and 15th forcing 10.6 turnovers per game.
Virginia on Jan. 29, Notre Dame on Feb. 1, Syracuse on Feb. 11, Virginia Tech on Feb. 22 and North Carolina State in the final game of the regular season are the only projected wins for Miami by the BPI for the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign. All of those games are at home.
