Reggie Bain, the brother of Miami edge-rusher Rueben, who has been an offensive graduate assistant with the Hurricanes, is leaving to take a job with SMU as initially reported by Gaby Urrutia and Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. Bain played collegiately at Florida Atlantic from 2014 through 2018.
Florida Atlantic signed Bain as a two-star prospect out of Miami Central in the 2014 class. Bain was a four-year starter for FAU where he was named a Freshman All-American by 247Sports in 2014, second-team All-Conference USA in 2015 and first-team All-Conference USA in 2017 and 2018 after missing the 2016 season with an injury.
Bain helped assist a Miami offense that was first nationally averaging 43.9 points per game and 537.2 yards per game in 2024. The Miami offensive line was elite. Miami was fourth nationally allowing 3.54 tackles for loss and 56th allowing 1.77 sacks per game. The Hurricanes were No. 6 nationally averaging 5.67 yards per carry.
Bain leaves Miami after three seasons working under offensive line coach Alex Mirabal. Mirabal is regarded as one of the best offensive line coaches in college football. At SMU, Bain will be reunited with Garin Justice, who was his offensive line coach at FAU. Justice was on the Miami staff in 2020 and 2021.
Bain leaves the Miami offensive staff after major changes with their defensive coaches entering the 2025 season. Defensive line coach Jason Taylor is the only returning position coach returning for Miami in 2025. New defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman is the new leader of the Miami defense.
Miami currently has openings at co-defensive line coach, linebackers and in the secondary. Hetherman coached linebackers as the defensive coordinator at Minnesota last season. Mario Cristobal might not choose to bring in another defensive line coach with Taylor on staff.
Joe Salave'a, who left to become the defensive line coach at Arizona, shared the same position with Taylor at Miami in the last two seasons. Mirabal is entrenched as the Miami offensive line coach. Bain leaving for SMU provides him an opportunity to work on another staff and eventually become a position coach elsewhere.
