ESPN named Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain twice on the ESPN look in the "2026 NFL draft: Top prospects at 100 different skills, traits." Matt Bowen of ESPN stated that Bain has the best hand usage and is the most physical defensive lineman in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Bowen notes how Bain sheds blockers, the physical presence he has rushing the passer and his elite College Football Playoff performance as the most physical DL. Bowen added that "Bain's combination of power and technique shows in his hand usage as a rusher."
There have been questions throughout the 2026 NFL Draft process about Bain having short arms. The praise for Bain has been to look at his tape. Bain has been one of the most productive DL in college football over the past three seasons.
Bain has been equally adept as a pass rusher and against the run throughout his collegiate career. Pro Football Focus graded Bain with a 92.5 overall defensive grade in 2025, third nationally among edge rushers, a 91.8 pass rush grade, 12th at his position and an 87.5 run defense grade, ninth in the country.
"Most physical DL: Rueben Bain Jr., MiamiMatt Bowen, ESPN
Bain has the play strength to control matchups at the point of attack. He stones blockers on the edges, and his physical presence shows when rushing the passer. Bain had 9.5 sacks -- including five in the College Football Playoff -- and his 71 pressures tied for second most in the nation.
Best hand usage:
He strikes with force to rock back offensive tackles, plus he has built-in counter moves to open a path to the quarterback."
More stats to illustate Bain's dominance
PFF also noted that Bain generated 67 pressures as a pass rusher with 54 hurries and three quarterback hits in 2025. Bain had 29 solo tackles against the run per PFF. In 16 games in 2025, Bain recorded 54 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and one pass defended.
Whoever drafts Bain will gain a player who can stay on the field for every down. Some DL are stout against the run, while others are situational pass rushers. Bain is equally adept at both. Bain and Akheem Mesidor (who is also projected to be a first-round pick) to dominate opposing offensive lines during the College Football Playoff.
Bain utilizes violent club and rip moves to instantly disengage from blockers. The ability of Bain to get under the pads of offensive tackles allows him to dominate in the run game and as a pass rusher. Appearing on the Rich Eisen Show on Thursday, NFL Network reporter Daniel Jeremiah hypothesized Bain could be more dominant inside in the NFL.
