Asked what he has been impressed with by how Miami is playing on offense this season other than leading the country in points per game, offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson provided three reasons during his weekly meeting with reporters on Monday.

Dawson stated the Miami yards per play are high based on their emphasis on being explosive, their punts are low and how successful the Hurricanes have been on third down as what has impressed him most with the success they have had this season on offense. Miami is first nationally averaging 577.3 total yards per game.

Miami is second averaging 48.3 points per game, first in plays over 10, 20 and 90 yards, first averaging 8.05 yards per play, their 12 punts are the second-fewest and Miami is first converting 60.23 percent of its third down attempts. The Hurricanes are also first nationally averaging 388.4 passing yards per game.

The Miami rushing offense has been worn down opponents in the second half. Miami is averaging 408 rushing yards, 4.00 yards per carry and has scored three TDs on the ground in the first half. Miami has 914 yards, averages 6.82 YPC and has 15 rushing TDs in the second half in 2024.

"I like the fact that our yards per play is high...You know we've made an emphasis to be explosive and so our yards per play is high, our total number of punts are low and our third down is high...That's probably three that that you know dictate you being on the field longer and so yards per play is huge...That one is very telling of an offense but the other two are are telling of keeping the ball on your side.""

Miami is putting up big numbers while keeping the ball on their side. The Hurricanes are fourth nationally in time of possession. Miami has the ball for an average of 34:09.14 per game. Miami has had a time of possession advantage in every game this season and often a major one.

The Hurricanes have outgained their opponent by at least 90 yards. Louisville was the first Miami opponent to be within 100 yards of the Hurricanes. Miami has asserted itself as the unquestioned best offense nationally by virtually every measure. All of the measures by Dawson have been met and exceeded by Miami in 2024.
