No. 1 Miami's 7-0 record has been built by a starting lineup whose paths to Coral Gables differ by a wide amount.

Some players signed out of high school, waited through injuries or depth-chart competition, and developed under the same coaching staff. Others arrived via the transfer portal after productive seasons at other programs.

The result is a group that has Miami in position to do great things this season. The starting 22 is inspired by the graphic below.

Darian Mensah (RS JR, quarterback)

  • 2026 stats: 166-of-204 passing (81.4%) for 2,151 yards, 22 touchdowns and one interception. Also has 73 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Mensah starred at Saint Joseph High School in Santa Maria, California, earning Mountain League Player of the Year honors before signing with Tulane. After redshirting in 2023, he started in 2024 and threw for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns. He transferred to Duke in 2025, where he threw for 3,973 yards and 34 touchdowns, earned second-team All-ACC recognition and helped the Blue Devils win the conference title. Mensah then transferred to Miami for 2026 and he is now living up to the hype.

Mark Fletcher Jr. (SR, running back)

  • 2026 stats: 81 carries for 414 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Also has five receptions for 42 yards.

Fletcher joined Miami in the 2023 class after a strong high school career at American Heritage in Plantation, Florida. The four-star back rushed for 514 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman and followed with 607 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024. He took a major step forward in 2025 as the featured runner, totaling 1,192 yards and 12 touchdowns while earning third-team All-ACC honors and the offensive MVP award in Miami's Cotton Bowl win over Ohio State. Now in his fourth year, he remains one of the offense's most reliable options.

Malachi Toney (SO, wide receiver)

  • 2026 stats: 66 receptions for 952 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns.

Toney played at American Heritage and joined Miami as part of the 2025 class after reclassifying. As a true freshman he set a school record with 109 catches for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns. He entered 2026 as an established starter and has been even more productive.

Cooper Barkate (RS SR, wide receiver)

  • 2026 stats: 24 receptions for 301 yards and four touchdowns (averaging 12.5 yards per catch).

Barkate began his college career at Harvard in 2022 after playing at St. Margaret's Episcopal and Mater Dei. Over three seasons with the Crimson he caught 113 passes for 1,742 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning All-Ivy League and All-America honors. He transferred to Duke in 2025, earned second-team All-ACC recognition and played alongside Darian Mensah. Both players transferred to Miami for 2026.

Samson Okunlola (RS JR, tackle)

  • 2026 stats: 438 offensive snaps.

Okunlola was an early recruiting win for Mario Cristobal. The consensus five-star prospect from Thayer Academy in Massachusetts signed with Miami in 2023 after considering Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia and other top programs. A knee injury limited him to three games as a freshman. He played in all 13 games in 2024 and all 16 in 2025, mostly as a backup, and made his first career start against Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl. He moved into the starting tackle role in 2026.

By 2026 he had earned a starting job at guard.

Ryan Rodriguez (GRAD, center)

A Miami native from Columbus High School, Rodriguez signed with the Hurricanes in 2021, before Cristobal's arrival. He saw limited action as a freshman and missed 2022 while recovering from surgery. He made his first start at center in the 2023 Pinstripe Bowl against Rutgers, opened 2024 as the starting left guard before a season-ending injury against Florida, and returned as a backup in 2025, playing in all 16 games. After multiple injuries and position changes, he entered 2026 as the starting center.

Max Buchanan (SO, guard)

  • 2026 stats: 244 offensive snaps.

Buchanan joined Miami from Seminole High School in Sanford, Florida, as a four-star prospect in the 2025 class. As a true freshman he appeared in five games in a backup role, making his debut against Bethune-Cookman. His role expanded significantly in 2026, when he moved into the starting guard rotation.

Matthew McCoy (RS SR, tackle)

McCoy signed with Miami in the 2022 class out of Creekside High School in St. Johns, Florida, among the first offensive line additions of the Cristobal era. Justin Scott (JR, defensive tackle)

  • 2026 stats: 21 total tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery.

He transferred to Miami for 2025, started all 16 games during the national championship game run, led the defense with 84 tackles and earned All-ACC honorable mention. He returned in 2025 with five starts across 12 appearances, recording 24 tackles and earning All-ACC honorable mention before missing the College Football Playoff with another injury. His production and playing time have been limited through the first seven games of 2026.
