This was a school who shuttered its hoops program in early 80’s. Leonard Hamilton led them out of that era. Did great.
Then Coach L later took it to another level: 4 Sweets 16s, 2 Elite Eights, 1 Final Four. https://t.co/6nQYqN7LMj
Sedano is a Miami native who is now a national reporter for ESPN. Larranaga was the fifth Miami head coach following the rebirth of the program in 1985. Bill Foster was the first Miami head coach of the rebirth, followed by Leonard Hamilton, Perry Clark and Frank Haith before Larranaga.
I have so much love for Jim Larranaga putting George Mason on the map and supporting my first TV job as a student sideline reporter. An incredible basketball coach and man. https://t.co/wNgSUTYflc

A tribute from Vitale is among the ultimate form of admiration in college basketball. No one has represented the sport more over the last 45 years. Vitale began his career as an assistant college basketball coach at Rutgers in 1971, the same year Larranaga started at Davidson.
Jim Larrañaga will always be a Miami legend. Took UM program to its first Final 4 and built a consistent winner in a tough conference. I think NIL/Portal stuff got the best of him last couple of seasons. He didn’t enjoy the constant part of that. Great man and coach.
— Will Manso (@WillManso) December 26, 2024
Manso posted multiple tributes from himself and others as well as a clip from the press conference with Larranaga explaining his reason for stepping down. Larranaga was one of the longest-tenured coaches in South Florida.
I've been told by multiple sources that this was Jim Larranaga's decision to step down, and it wasn't pressure from the administration.

Goodman is a longtime college basketball reporter and writer. Larranaga stated during the press conference the changes in college basketball with NIL and the transfer portal played a major role in his decision to step down immediately.
It’s the end of an era for @CanesHoops, as there will be a change in leadership at Head Coach. Thank you to the legend Coach Jim Larrañaga for everything he has done for Miami’s program. Without a doubt, the best coach in program history. pic.twitter.com/oIesoupMlr
— CanesInSight (@CanesInSight) December 26, 2024
Larranaga led Miami to milestones that had never been accomplished in program history. The foundation is set for Miami to be successful. The permanent head coach will have to balance what made Miami successful from 2021 through 2023 with embracing the new era of NIL and the transfer portal.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra discussing the news of Jim Larrañaga stepping down as UM men’s basketball coach. Spo had just found out the news after shoot-around;

Jim Larrañaga explaining why he’s stepping away from UM basketball program. Makes it clear he loves Miami and the school, but the new landscape of college basketball with the portal has become too much:

It was an honor covering Jim Larrañaga and witnessing first hand his unconditional love for his players and The U. He is a once in a lifetime coach and an even better person. This hug was captured days before I moved to Chicago and he led the Canes to the Final Four! pic.twitter.com/1pMPexrNU4

Ruthie Polinsky who worked in Miami for many years before moving to Chicago gave her remembrance of Larranaga with a short video clip greeting him after a game at the Watsco Center. The tribute was kind and captured the type of person Larranaga is.
