Miami’s Week 1 surge into the national conversation now includes early Heisman traction on both sides of the ball. In On3’s post–Week 1 Heisman Trophy poll of seven national analysts, quarterback Carson Beck debuted at No. 6 with 37 points, and defensive lineman Rueben Bain checked in at No. 9 with 10, giving the Hurricanes two names inside the Top 10 after Sunday’s win over Notre Dame.

QB Carson Beck

In his Miami debut, Beck went 20-of-31 for 205 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions as No. 10 Miami edged No. 6 Notre Dame 27–24. He steered the go-ahead march — 10 plays, 46 yards in 2:17 — to set up Carter Davis’ 47-yard field goal with 1:04 left.

Beck posted an 84.9 QBR, distributing to Malachi Toney (6 catches, 82 yards, TD) and CJ Daniels (TD) while the run game logged 37 carries for 127 yards to keep the Irish off balance. It was a mistake-free game that helps keep Beck's Heisman candidacy.

"It must have felt like the start of something fresh for Beck, who had receivers making some ridiculous catches for him from start to finish. That was a luxury he didn’t enjoy last year at Georgia, where the Bulldogs were among the nation’s leaders in dropped passes. Beck looked comfortable making the move over to Miami. He was relatively crisp as a passer, mostly avoiding potential turnover throws. That he executed at the highest level with the game on the line, putting Miami in position to make a winning field goal, portended the start of what could be a very fruitful year with the ‘Canes."

DL Rueben Bain

Bain supplied the game’s defensive exclamation point. The junior finished with six tackles, 0.5 sack, and a fourth-quarter interception he returned for 12 yards. On Tuesday he was named the ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week.

"Bain was all over the field for Miami, as evidenced by his interception on a ball thrown out to the flats. It was a ricochet, but Bain was in perfect position to capitalize and he did.
His ability to wreck games up front single-handedly elevates the Miami defense. And if Bain can continue to have the kind of impact he had in the Notre Dame game, he’s a definite Heisman Trophy candidate."

The Hurricanes’ front generated 3.0 sacks and 5.0 TFLs against the Irish while holding them to 94 rushing yards (3.5 per carry). That's the kind of team defense that helps a lineman’s candidacy beyond just individual stats.

Miami vaulted to No. 5 in the AP Top 25 after the win — the program’s highest ranking in years — slotting the Hurricanes in the playoff race as September begins. Miami faces Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium (7 p.m. ET). The matchup gives both Bain and Beck a chance to pad stats.
