The University of Miami has extended a basketball scholarship offer to Calvin Russell, a standout two-sport athlete from Miami Northwestern High School. This is in addition to a football scholarship offer from the Hurricanes for Russell.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 195 pounds, Russell is ranked as the No. 3 wide receiver in the 2026 class by 247Sports. He also recently just received his 5th star by the same recruiting service. But, Russell has been open about his love for both sports and is not willing to say he loves one more than the other. When schools visit Russell, he openly communicates his desire to play both basketball and football at the collegiate level.
Russell played on a state championship football team led by Teddy Bridgewater at Miami Northwestern. His multifaceted skill set has attracted basketball scholarship offers from other prominent programs including Michigan, Illinois, LSU, Arizona State and FAU.
The Hurricanes' decision to offer Russell a basketball scholarship shows their commitment to his talent. It is common for programs to be open to the multi-sport aspirations of high school athletes during the recruitment process. Whether the multi-sport high school stars compete at the college level is a case-by-case basis, although it is very uncommon, especially with sports that have seasons that overlap.
Head coaches Jai Lucas (basketball) and Mario Cristobal (football) present a competitive duo to recruit Russell. Cristobal currently has the Hurricanes 2026 recruiting class sitting at 8th in the nation and Lucas is completely overhauling the roster following a rough season for basketball.
On3's recruiting prediction machine (RPM) has Miami at the top with a 28.7% chance to land Russell. Florida and FSU come in at No. 2 and No. 3. Russell has set his commitment date to July 5 and has mentioned that Miami let him know that he is needed.
