Weekend summary as Miami baseball loses series to Florida State

Miami lost two out of three games in their weekend series to Florida State this weekend.

After losing game one 14-1, Miami prevented a sweep with a 9-6 win on Friday night, but a 10-6 Florida State victory on Saturday gave the Seminoles the series victory. Miami dropped to 14-11 overall and 1-5 in the ACC with the loss on Saturday. Florida State improved to 20-3 and 5-1 with the win.

Miami took control of the game on Friday night when they took a permanent lead by going in front 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning. The Hurricanes added one run in the third inning, another run in the fifth and a single run in the seventh to take and 8-2 lead. Florida State scored two in the eighth to cut the deficit to 8-4.

Miami added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning and Florida State plated two in the ninth as the Hurricanes won game two 9-6. Derek Williams had two hits in three at-bats with three runs scored, two RBIs and a home run. Bobby Marsh had three hits in four at-bats with a run scored, four RBIs and a HR for Miami.

Griffin Hugus pitched 5.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, both earned, with three walks and five strikeouts to improve to 3-2 with the win on Friday night. Brody DeLamielleure had three hits in five at-bats with two runs scored, two RBIs and a HR for Florida State in the win. Jamie Arnold took the loss for Florida State.

The final game of the series began the same as the middle contest. Florida State scored single runs in the first and second innings to take 1-0 and 2-1 leads before Miami went in front 3-2 in the bottom of the second. Florida State blew the game open with a seven-fourth to take command of the game with a 9-3 lead.

Miami scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 9-6. Florida State scored in the top of the eighth to stretch their lead to 9-6, which was the final score. Daniel Cuvet had one hit in three at-bats with a run scored and three RBIs, Fabio Peralta had three hits and two stolen bases and Max Galvin two RBIs for Miami.

Five Florida State players had two hits led by Gage Harrelson and Max Williams who each had three RBIs in the decisive game in the series. Brian Walters allowed seven runs, six earned in three innings for Miami to take the loss. Peyton Prescott got the win for FSU allowing two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in four innings of relief.

Miami week ahead

Miami hosts Stetson before traveling to North Carolina next weekend. Stetson is 12-12 overall and playing Jacksonville this weekend. North Carolina is 17-6 overall and 3-5 in the ACC. North Carolina split the first two games of a three-game series at Boston College with the decider on Sunday.
