Tre Donaldson agreed to a two-way deal with the Heat after one season at Miami in which he became the one of the ACC's best guards. He averaged 16.4 points, 5.7 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals across 35 games while starting 33 times.

Donaldson has the right skill set to be an NBA guard
Donaldson scored 574 total points during Miami's 26-9 season. He also recorded 201 assists against 74 turnovers, 60 made 3-pointers and 48 steals. He shot 45.4% from the field, 35.9% from 3-point range and 76.6% at the free-throw line.
Donaldson carried a heavy load at 34 minutes per game and still had a noteworthy assist-to-turnover ratio.
At 6-foot-3 and 195 pounds, Donaldson has the size to absorb contact from NBA guards. He may not be an above-the-rim athlete in the traditional sense, but he is strong enough to play through contact and has shown he can get downhill without losing control.
Tre Donaldson's best moments at Miami
Donaldson's defining performance came against Virginia Tech on Feb. 17. Miami trailed late in a game it had no business losing if it wanted to stay near the top of the ACC standings. Donaldson scored a career-high 32 points, put up 24 of Miami's 36 second-half points and scored the Hurricanes' final 15 points. He made the game-winning free throw with 12 seconds left in a 67-66 win.
Donaldson also had 27 points and 10 assists against Georgia Tech. He shot 8-for-13 from the field and 8-for-9 at the line in a 91-81 win. He was named ACC Player of the Week after averaging 24 points and eight assists across wins over Wake Forest and Georgia Tech.
He also had 21 points on a perfect 8-for-8 from the field against Delaware State. In his return to Tallahassee, Donaldson posted 21 points, six assists and six rebounds as Miami beat Florida State 83-73. At SMU, he nearly had a triple-double with 17 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
Tre Donaldson remained impactful during Miami's postseason run
He had 14 points and six assists in Miami's ACC Tournament win over Louisville. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Donaldson had 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the No. 7 seed Hurricanes beat Missouri 80-66. He made five of seven 3-point attempts in that game, including a key three after Missouri took a second-half lead.
Miami lost to second-seeded Purdue in the round of 32, but Donaldson still scored 13 points.
Tre Donaldson's path to the NBA includes three major college programs
He began at Auburn, where he played 32 games as a freshman and 35 as a sophomore. During his second season, he averaged 6.7 points and 3.2 assists while shooting 41.2% from 3-point range. He then transferred to Michigan and helped the Wolverines win the Big Ten Tournament title. Donaldson averaged 11.3 points, 4.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds while making 63 three-pointers at a 37.5% clip.
What will Heat fans want to see improve?
Donaldson has enough shooting and production to make defenders respect him, but he will need to become more consistent from NBA distance to force defenders over ball screens and create room for his passing.
Defense will be the other major test for him. The Heat will need him to show that he can keep up with quicker guards and avoid becoming a target.
