Miami 1B in the "Ranking all 136 FBS QB situations into tiers ahead of the 2025 season" by ESPN. All of the QB situations examined by ESPN nationally go two-deep on the depth charts. Miami brought in former Georgia QB Carson Beck through the transfer portal and returns Emory Williams after he redshirted in 2024.

Clemson, LSU, Oklahoma, Penn State and South Carolina are listed as Tier 1 at the "Top of the class" by ESPN. Miami is just below those teams in Tier 1b with Florida and Texas. Four of the five teams in Tier 1, plus D.J. Lagway of Florida and Arch Manning at Texas, are returning to programs they played for in 2024.

Manning is the only returning QB who was not the primary starter in 2024. John Mateer, who transferred from Washington State to Oklahoma, is the only other transfer with Beck among the nine Tier 1 programs listed by Hale. Beck is the most experienced returning QB nationally entering the 2025 season.

Beck had an inconsistent 2024 season. In the first three games in 2024, Beck threw for 680 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. Beck averaged 301.3 yards per game with 10 TDs and 12 interceptions in the next six games. In the next four games, Beck averaged 224.25 YPG with 11 TDs and no interceptions.

"A year ago, Beck was the clear-cut top QB entering the season, and though he put up relatively strong numbers again in 2024, he was largely considered a disappointment. Then he was injured in the SEC title game and transferred to Miami, and now Beck he enters 2025 as something of a mystery. He could recover his NFL draft stock with an elite season following in Ward's footsteps ... or he could be a multimillion-dollar bust."
David Hale, ESPN

Beck finished the 2024 season completing 64.7 percent of his pass attempts for 3,485 yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Miami will have an entirely new passing game in 2025 after losing QB Cam Ward and the top six receivers from the 2025 roster.

Beck will play behind a better offensive line with Miami than he did with Georgia. Bulldog receivers dropped 31 passes in 2024 that hindered Beck's effectiveness. Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson set a blueprint with Ward on how to build his offense around a transfer. The hope is Dawson can do the same with Beck in 2025.
