Will Miami continue to struggle against ACC opponents?
The Miami Hurricanes are 6-0 overall, 2-0 in ACC play, and the sixth-ranked team in the country in the Associated Press Top 25 and AFCA Coaches Polls. But their journey to this point hasn't been as easy as their record or ranking would suggest. Miami is just a couple of plays away from potentially being 4-2.
Miami's first two ACC opponents of the year, Virginia Tech and Cal, have given the Hurricanes a couple of scares early on, with both teams outplaying Miami for much of their respective games. With six ACC games to go, will the Hurricanes continue to struggle, or is their best football still in front of them?
None of Miami's remaining opponents are ranked, but four of those teams have at least four wins (Louisville, 4-2; Duke, 5-1; Georgia Tech, 5-2; Syracuse, 5-1). Three of those games will be on the road, with the only home game coming against Manny Diaz and the Duke Blue Devils.
Each of these teams has the potential to challenge the Hurricanes, even though Miami is expected to be the favorite in each game. Miami will likely lose one or two games for the remainder of the season. According to ESPN's Football Power Index, Miami has only a 16.3 percent chance of winning all remaining games.
But even if Miami drops a game, it's not the end of the world. What matters more than going 12-0 is how Miami wins games going forward. Are they winning wire-to-wire? Are they pulling away in the second half for a big win? Or is every victory by the smallest of margins in a chaotic comeback?
As great as it has been seeing the Comeback Canes over their last two games, that kind of play isn't sustainable. It would behoove Miami to start fast against Louisville and play the rest of their games that way.
If the Hurricanes fall behind by multiple possessions against Louisville, it might just be their first loss of the season. But if they start strong and show from the get-go that they're the better team in all facets, it shouldn't be a contest.
Miami needs to play disciplined football at 100 percent of their potential the rest of the way. If they do that and start every game strong, they'll be unbeaten heading into the ACC Championship. If not, it'll cost them several games and potentially a CFB Playoff spot, wasting away their best season in years.
