Now that former Arizona State Sun Devils starting quarterback Sam Leavitt is on his way to the LSU Tigers, another team in need of a new quarterback for next season will need to have its head on a swivel. That team would once again be the Miami Hurricanes. Their last two quarterbacks have been transfer portal success stories in Carson Beck and Cam Ward before that. Beck is about to turn pro...
So what are the Hurricanes to do here? Well, they probably should look to the portal for their next guy. However, it might serve them to go with a promising prospect who is not going to exhaust all of his eligibility immediately upon coming to Coral Gables. One player that should be on Miami's radar has to be former five-star quarterback Husan Longstreet. He just entered the transfer portal out of USC.
Longstreet may hail from Corona, California, but he is not starting next year for Lincoln Riley's team. Look for USC to have one of its best seasons in ages with Jayden Maiava back for a third season in Los Angeles. Truth be told, Miami may have the better roster than USC entering next season anyway. This could be a great opportunity for Longstreet to move across the country to assert his stardom.
The other thing working for Miami here is Shannon Dawson is not expected to leave for another job.
What could Husan Longstreet provide to Miami that Sam Leavitt cannot?
According to 247Sports, is the No. 6 quarterback in this transfer portal class and the No. 19 overall prospect in this cycle. 247Sports had him as the No. 4 quarterback, the No. 3 prospect from California, and the No. 32 overall player nationally coming out of high school. In short, he is way too talented to keep on the bench for another season. The issue is Maiava could win the Heisman Trophy.
Again, adding a player that is both talented and green could be a bit of a departure for Cristobal at Miami. He and his staff have valued starting experience above all else at quarterback. It has worked out well for them landing players out of the portal, but it has also been a bit of a catch 22. How can a guy gain starting experience at Miami when they almost always go for a transfer portal quarterback?
This is why Cristobal putting his trust and faith in Dawson's evaluation of Longstreet will be most crucial. Miami chooses to outspend most anybody in the transfer portal at the most premium of positions. For now, the Canes have a national championship to win. No matter what happens at Hard Rock Stadium on Monday night, the Hurricanes have officially arrived under the watch of Cristobal.
Keep in mind that the transfer portal will be open for an additional five days for a team like Miami here.
