Miami Hurricanes Football: CanesCamp Day Two Notes

More from Miami Hurricanes Football

Friday was media day at the University of Miami and the media was able to sit around for the duration of the practice (only time we’ll be allowed to do this in the offseason). We then got to sit around and talk to every player on the roster, including the freshman.

We were out there on Thursday and here are some notes from Friday’s Miami Hurricanes practice.

  • We all know that Brad Kaaya is a stud so there’s no need to even bring up how he looked in camp. However, the guys behind him had a really solid practice on Friday. Malik Rosier looked really sharp and was slinging it all over the field, while Evan Shirreffs showed some more arm strength than originally reported when he came out of high school.
  • Mark Walton impressed me more during this practice than he did in his first day. He looked a little bit more explosive and there’s no doubt that he’s going to push a lot of these running backs during camp.
  • The wide receivers continued to look really good in practice. Tyre Brady impressed and made some really nice, tough catches. Lawrence Cager played big and showed some crisp routes in the limited time we saw some one-on-one action. Stacy Coley was able to get open with his quickness a couple of times, which should be music to Canes fans’ ears.
  • Christopher Herndon IV continues to impress me with his size and speed, and it’s only been two days, but I am now agreeing with the people that believe he’ll be the starting tight end of this team some time this season.
  • The offensive line showed some good things, Kc McDermott in particular. Nick Linder and Danny Isidora also looked good in some of the drills they ran against the defensive line. Tyree St. Louis had some good reps, but also struggled with physicality and got sat down by Demetrius Jackson on a one-on-one. Trevor Darling, Alex Gall, Nick Linder, Sunny Odogwu and Isidora was the first-team offensive line today, but take that with a grain of salt.
  • The defensive line also looked very good for the second straight day. Gerald Willis III won’t play this season but he was wrecking havoc in the middle in most of his drills. Chad Thomas is an absolute and Demetrius Jackson showed some flashes as well.
  • Sheldrick Redwine was one of the defensive backs that stood out the most today. Redwine hung tough against some of the best receivers on the team and continued to get praised by Al Golden all throughout practice. Dallas Crawford also looked much improved and he had a beautiful over-the-shoulder interception on a pass intended for Braxton Berrios. Also, Corn Elder continues to shine.
  • After practice, Coach Golden was asked about his job security and he quickly responded: “I’m not worried about it. That’s your job. My job is to get this team ready.”
  • Golden also talked about how freshman Kendrick Norton and RJ McIntosh were ready to compete this fall, and based on what I saw in drills, I can definitely back that up.
  • Defensive backs coach Paul Williams talked about the experience of his group this season, which is probably the best he’s had, “We have guys that are juniors and seniors now that really understand it .. You like to have experienced guys back there.” He also mentioned that Deon Bush and Crawford are the two leaders of the secondary.
  • Running backs coach Ice Harris said he’s excited about the versatility of the running backs this season because of their ability to be every down backs. “The running back position is in a great place here at the University of Miami,” he added.
  • Courtel Jenkins said that he’s gotten stronger, faster and has lost 17 pounds and will play at 308 this season, and he’s ready to “ball out.”
  • Stacy Coley is playing at 195 this season and he says that he’s still playing at the same speed despite the added weight.
