Pro-Canes: Indianapolis Colts Phillip Dorsett Turning Heads, Literally!

“Dorsett had four receptions for a team-high 51 yards in the Colts’ preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. That was the good news. The bad news was that Dorsett lost a fumble after having the ball stripped from behind,” wrote Mike Wells, ESPN Staff Writer. “He bounced back by catching all three passes thrown his way and finishing with 21 yards in the second preseason game against the Chicago Bears. Dorsett likely would have had more receptions and yards, but he left the game with a knee contusion in the second half. He’s day to day.”

Other than a preseason fumble, Phillip Dorsett and his blazing speed have been impressing during training camp and proving that the Hurricanes can still put out great talents.

“He’s a big play waiting to happen, but again he has to take care of the football,” coach Chuck Pagano said, via Colts.com. “You’re looking at a guy that’s going to be an outstanding football player, but you know what you’re going to remember is the turnover. But again, he’s going to be a dynamic guy for us.”

“It’s different. It’s different from college. I’d say ball security, just catching the ball and tucking it,” Dorsett said, in the locker room after the Eagles preseason opener. “I would say the game is a little faster (than college). I would say a lot of these people have been in these defenses for a couple of years. They really know what they’re doing. They know how to play.”

Rookie wide receiver, and Miami Hurricanes’ deep threat, Phillip Dorsett was drafted in the 1st round (29th Overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts have been making moves at that position as they switched out one Hurricanes’ great, Reggie Wayne, for another in Andre Johnson.

According to Colts Media Reporter, Steve Andress (earlier this month), “Dorsett has already learned much in his first week of training camp. He certainly has two good examples to learn from in 2014 (Andre Johnson & T.Y. Hilton, who ironically, is also from Miami, FL, though he played his college football at Florida International University).”

Dorsett will be competing for playing time with Andre Johnson, T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Duron Carter and Vincent Brown.

“He’s a very explosive talent,” said Johnson (Friday, Aug. 7th). “He’s going to get better with time, as he learns the game.”

“The biggest thing I learned from T.Y. is probably being crafty out there. He’s a real crafty guy. That’s how he gets open a lot,” said Dorsett (Friday, Aug. 7th). “The biggest thing I learned from Andre is just the way to work, the way to go about your business night and day on-the-field and off-the-field.”

Dorsett ran an unofficial time of 4.25 sec and 4.27 sec (40-yard-dash) at the Hurricanes Pro Day and a 4.33 sec at the NFL Combine. At Miami, the talented pass catcher accumulated: 17 touchdowns, 2,132 yards, and 121 receptions over his college career (according to hurricanessports.com).

“You look at Phillip (Dorsett) out there, that guy can run. You miss one step on him, he’s going past you,” cornerback Jalil Brown said, on Colts Roundup. According to Colts QB, Matt Hasselback, “Fastest guy is Phillip Dorsett.”

“All of a sudden he dropped it into seventh gear,” cornerback Greg Toler said, via another Mike Wells article. “I was like, ‘Wow.’ I had to tell him to slow down. He flat out burns down the field. You sit on his routes too much or miss on a jam and it’s a foot race.”

The Indianapolis Colts will take on the St. Louis Rams on August 29th, 2015 @ 8 p.m. (EDT) for their third preseason game of the year.
