Trust me, after the gut-wrenching early season loss to Cincinnati and just before entering a sold-out Doak Campbell Stadium (Check Out: FSU vs. Miami Sold Out) and ACC play, I was fortunate enough to sit down with Miami Hurricanes’ former receiver, Andre King (1997-2000).

King is a well-needed source of insight. There’s a lot of heat coming at the ‘Canes right now and deservingly so, but King played for the 2000 Hurricanes team that lost early to Washington. However, they miraculously roared back, winning out, beating #1 FSU, #2 VaTech, and #7 Florida (Sugar Bowl). So, King would know the current climate at Miami and more importantly, what it takes to salvage this season.
I’m not saying this Miami team is as good as King’s 2000 Miami team, but there’s still some hope to make the best of 2015.
Furthermore, King had won Miami’s Dale Melching Leadership Award as a senior at UM, played in the NFL and now, he’s both the Head Football Coach and Athletic Director for Loganville Christian Academy in Georgia. King is a natural leader and had played on a great 2000 Miami team surrounded by star-studded players, so, what he says is gold right now!
Of course, King is extremely disappointed with the Cincinnati loss and clearly understands what the disgruntled Miami fans are currently feeling as we’re an extremely passionate fan-base, but he also knows that playing Florida State takes on a life of its own.
“Listen, when we’re in school, you’ve got the regular season and you got the bowl season. Florida State is a whole ‘nother season,” says King. “We don’t remember last week, we only think about next week. Look, get your school work done as quick as you can and you get over to the building at noon. Get taped up, start watching film, watch every snap Florida State has taken from the season start. You watch all their games. That’s just the week it is … you’re a machine come Florida State week.”
The rivalry between UM and FSU is one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports. And, Tallahassee can be an intimidating place to play at. But, as a player, going face-to-face with FSU is one of the biggest moments in their athletic careers. Thus, the game becomes bigger than everything else going on around it.
“It’s gonna be loud, we usually pump crowd noise in … tighten up our hand signals,” continues King. “There’s just so much going into Florida State week, it’s a bowl game all in itself because there’s a lot of implications, man, Florida State and Miami go way back, lot of bragging rights!”
Besides just talking about “Florida State Week”, King and I covered several topics. We spoke about the loss to Cincy, the present Miami perception, where it should start for the ‘Canes, the coaching staff, the ’00 season, and so much more.
