The Hurricanes had their most dominant performance by far in the teams’ history. Miami set the tone in the first half by taking a mind-boggling 42-19 lead into intermission.
After starting the season 8-3, the number 25 Hurricanes had a five-game winning streak as they welcomed the number one Blue Devils to the then Bank United Center.
A 25-1 run in which Duke went without a field goal for over eight minutes led to the decisive victory. Duke missed a nearly astounding 13 consecutive shots as the Hurricanes were the one playing like they were the nation’s top-ranked team. Miami punctuated the first half by scoring the first eight after halftime to extend their lead to 49-19.
Miami’s win was the third largest margin of victory ever over a number one team and the Blue Devils biggest loss in nearly 30 years. The win was both Miami and Head Coach Jim Larranaga’s first over the nation’s top-ranked team.
Three Hurricanes did most of the damage. Guard Durand Scott scored 25 points had six rebounds and four assists before fouling out, Kenny Kadji had 22 points and six rebounds on 9-11 from the floor and point guard Shane Larkin finished with 18 points, ten rebounds and five assists.
This game can be pointed to as a milestone victory in school history. It was Miami’s sixth in a row that reason, a streak that would eventually grow to 14 consecutive victories.
That Hurricanes team would go on to finish 15-3 to win the ACC’s regular-season title outright and also capture the ACC Tournament title. Its the only team in school history to win a conference title outright and a conference tournament title.

After Duke won 16 of their first 18 meetings against Miami, the Hurricanes have turned the tide over the last five seasons. Miami had now won four of the previous six games before losing the first meeting of 2017.
