Miami leads series 2-0

Although not as impressive as Miami’s 42-14 victory over Arkansas State in in 1997, this one had historical significance. This was the third start of Brad Kaaya’s career and his first over a team from the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The Hurricanes scored quickly. Kaaya hit Philip Dorsett on a 63 yard touchdown pass 3:08 into the game. Arkansas State answered 2:49 later, but the tie was short lived. The Hurricanes answered the Wolves game tying drive in 39 seconds. Kaaya threw a 19 yard touchdown pass to tight end Clive Walford and Miami never trailed again.

Kaaya finished 16-24 for 342 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Kaaya fell seven yards short of his total passing yards from the first two games and exceeded his touchdown total. This was both his first game with 300 yards passing and four touchdowns.

Duke Johnson had 90 yards rushing on 14 carries, one touchdown rushing and one receiving. Dorsett finished with 194 yards receiving on five receptions and a touchdown and Walford had three catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.

Miami’s defense forced two turnovers and allowed just 93 yards rushing on 47 Arkansas State attempts.
