The Miami Hurricanes scored 24 points off of four Notre Dame turnovers and sprinted to a 27-0 halftime lead in a 41-8 victory on Saturday night.

The Miami Hurricanes defense turned in their second consecutive dominant defensive performance against one of college football’s best teams. Miami used a punishing running game offensively and shut down Notre Dame’s top five rushing offense.

Miami punted on its first possession after one first down. The Hurricanes then scored touchdowns on its next three drives to take a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter. The first two touchdown drives came in the first quarter and gave Miami a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Miami got a touchdown and a field goal off of two Brandon Wimbush’s interceptions. After the second one Notre Dame Head Coach Brian Kelly sent in backup quarterback Ian Book to relieve Wimbush.

Book had the Fighting Irish driving to get a score on the board before halftime. On the ninth play of the drive Notre Dame faced a third and six from the Miami 38 yard line. Book telegraphed a pass into the flat and Freshmen Trajan Bandy jumped the route and took the interception back 65 yards for a pick six. That was basically good night to Notre Dame.

Miami quarterback Malik Rosier led the Hurricanes on a nine play 90-yard drive in 4:30 on the first drive of the second half to extend the lead to 34-0. Any small chance Notre Dame might have had was over before the touched the ball in the second half.

The teams each added a touchdown and Miami went on to a 41-8 victory. The Hurricanes dominated on both sides of the ball.

Rosier didn’t have to do much through the air. He finished 15 of 24 for 137 yards, a touchdown and interception. He also added 12 carries for 53 yards and two touchdowns. Travis Homer led the offense against the Irish. He finished with 18 carries for 146 yards. It was Homer’s second straight 100 yard game against a great rush defense.

  • A lot was made of the Notre Dame offensive line being too powerful for Miami. The Hurricanes were able to dominate up front on both side of the ball. Miami’s speed was clearly too much for Notre Dame. They were also more physical than the Irish.

Notre Dame entered the game fifth in the country in rushing. The Hurricanes defense shut down the Notre Dame run. Notre Dame had 109 yards on 36 carries for an average of three yards per carry. Notre Dame’s longest run was 20 yards.

The Miami defense started slow this season. The last four games have helped the legend of the turnover chain grow. The Hurricanes have now forced four turnovers four games in a row. The last two against teams ranked in the top 13 nationally.
