Miami missed on some local stars in the defensive backfield in recruiting that had some fans talking about what could have been. In spite of that, the U still brought in an exceptional class in the secondary. Rosier has taken notice.

"“I think another guy is Gilbert [Frierson]. Gilbert is going to be really good, so is Gurvan Hall. Those guys in secondary are just running balls down. There was one play, where [Frierson] was open, you see him… there was a lot of grass and he just collapsed that grass. I think he dove and knocked the ball away. So, I mean, he’s doing a great job and those defensive players are going to be really, really good.”"

Johnson will be the leader of the secondary. In 2017 he led the team in tackles, tied for the team lead in interceptions with Jackson and in fumble recoveries with Freshman defensive end Jonathan Garvin and led the team with three forced fumbles. Johnson is focused on the upcoming season and how the team can improve.

"“Basically, when we come out here, we come out with the mindset that we want to erase last year…We’re not even thinking about last year, for the most part. We are coming out as a new team with new faces. We are trying to establish leaders and compete every day. That’s how we go about our business.”"
