At the conclusion of spring practice, Miami Hurricanes Head Coach Mark Richt said they the offense would be simplified if N’Kosi Perry or Jarren Williams becomes the quarterback.

If for whatever reason Malik Rosier is not the starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes next season the offense will be simplified according to Mark Richt. Richt earlier this week mentioned those that displayed toughness, physicality and consistency would get playing time in 2018. Rosier has the first two down.

Getting more consistency from Rosier will be vital this fall. Richt told reporters following Saturday’s final scrimmage of the spring that Rosier will make some plays that only a veteran quarterback could make.

One of those plays occurred in Saturday’s scrimmage. Rosier called an audible against a blitz from versus Manny Diaz defense. He also knew when Darrell Langham would break open and hit him in stride for a touchdown. It was the second time in less than a week Rosier was able to recognize the blitz and adjust for a touchdown.

If Rosier goes to the bench because of ineffectiveness or injury Richt indicated he’d be comfortable with Perry or Williams. The offense would not be as sophisticated as it would be with Rosier in the game. Richt explained after Saturday’s scrimmage what he expects the quarterbacks to know.

"“I’m going to put him on a need to know basis…I’m going to tell you what you need to know to function. You may not know why it works, or why we do what we do, but you’re going to know what to do. One day, you might know why we do it."

"“If we think somebody can perform better, and maybe lighten his load a little bit, or maybe give some more responsibility to our center — you’ve got Tyler Gauthier, he can direct traffic without a quarterback saying who the Mike (middle) linebacker is and all that. If I have to do something like that, I’ll do it.”"

Rosier didn’t have to worry much about getting pushed last season. Evan Sherrifs was not a serious threat to take Rosier’s job from him. He faces far more competition this season from Perry and Williams. Their presence might push Rosier yo another level of play.

When Richt began his career as an assistant coach with Florida State quarterbacks were expected to wait a few years before getting a chance to play. The depth in the quarterback rooms at the major Power football schools during the nineties was exceptional. Richt spoke about how that’s changed.

"“We had ’em kind of stacked up…Most guys didn’t play until their third or fourth years, and they kind of knew it. They knew if they were going to start two years, it was going to be a great career. … Guys kind of knew that was the deal.”If we had kind of a guy that’s an undisputed champ…a young guy might know he’s going to be redshirted.”"

The Miami Hurricanes were able to do that with Perry and Weldon last season and with Rosier as a Freshman in 2014. Jarren Williams could potentially redshirt this season, but it doesn’t seem like that Richt and his staff are leaning that way.
