Mark Richt had the Miami football team on the precipice of the College Football Playoffs last season. Entering the Hurricanes final regular season game at Pittsburgh, the Hurricanes were ranked second in the College Football Playoff rankings.

ESPN writer Ryan McGee posed the question of who the next College Football Head Coach to win a title would be to his colleague Mark Schlabach. The question was asked as a part of their list of 100 things 100 days until College Football Kicks off. Does Mark Richt belong on that list?

McGee came up with the question: “Who’s the next FBS head coach to win a national championship (20)? Schlabach’s answer was Georgia and Kirby Smart. He reasons that Smart knows Alabama and Nick Saban better than anyone, that Georgia is upgrading their facilities and their fertile recruiting grounds.

All of those reasons could also describe Miami. Mark Richt did a great job at Georgia, but he has a much better-recruiting base now than he did and Smart has with the Bulldogs. No school in the country has as many great players in their own backyard than Miami does.

Miami will open the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility later this year and Richt’s experience as a Head Coach should outweigh Smart’s knowledge of the Alabama blueprint. There is more than one way to success.

Although the SEC has dominated the National Championships over the last 15 years, the ACC has been in the mix just as much over the last five. Clemson and Florida State have won National Championships in the last five seasons.
