Last season Rosier only had the now departed Evan Sheriffs to worry about. Rosier knew for the most part that Sheriffs would not replace him. Richt had almost no choice but to pull Rosier against Pittsburgh last season.

Sheriffs came in and accomplished nothing in his one series. He failed to complete either of his pass attempts and took a sack on the other play. Freshmen Perry and Cade Weldon redshirted in 2017.

This season, Perry and Weldon do not have the option of a Redshirt season. Miami also added Freshman Jarren Williams who will also challenge to be the second string quarterback.

Rosier will be the starter when Miami plays their season opener against LSU in Arlington, Texas next month. He will have a much shorter leash this season. If he struggles, even in the opener the likelihood is we will see either Perry or Williams. Weldon is a far greater long shot to be the second string quarterback.

"“I know they like the young guy (N’Kosi) Perry. But you have a proven winner with Rosier. It’s a tough call.”"

Richt’s laid-back nature has often led critics to question if he can lead a team to a National Championship. The first step in that process is being able to out recruit the marquee programs. Miami has improved their recruiting classes in each other the three seasons under Richt.

"“I love what Mark (Richt) has done at that place in such a short time. He has embraced the idea of ‘The U’ — but has put his own accountability and responsibility spin on it. And he’s recruiting his tail off. Anyone who thought he was just going to pack it in and ride off into the sunset doesn’t know the competitive fire in him. I wouldn’t be shocked in the least if they win the ACC this year or next. They’re that close.”"

Some of those that don’t follow Miami closely have questioned if Miami has what it takes on the defensive line this season to compete for an ACC Championship. The Hurricanes will be fine at defensive end with Demetrius and Joe Jackson scheduled to start. Gerald Willis should be a force at defensive tackle.
