RIcht called it the 12 formation and compared it to when they used David Njoku and Chris Herndon IV together often during the 2016 season. Njoku and Herndon combined for 71 receptions for 1,032 yards and 10 touchdowns during the 2016 season. Njoku left for the NFL after his Redshirt Sophomore season in 2016.

Herndon finished second on the Hurricanes with 40 receptions, 477 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2017. He continued the tradition of tight end U. Without Herndon healthy for the final two games of 2017 the offense struggled.

Irvin was unable to produce at the level that Herndon established throughout 2017. He had four receptions for 32 yards in the losses to Clemson and Wisconsin. Jordan and Mallory are far more talented than Irvin and Polendey. Polendey is known primarily as a blocker.

David Lake of Inside the U reported that two of the areas of emphasis during the first day of practice was third downs and the wide receivers winning one on one battles.

The Hurricanes struggled mightily on third downs last season. They are going to have to improve on third downs significantly on both sides of the ball if they hope to take that next step of the football programs revival.

Lake also reported that Graduate Transfer Defensive Tackle Tito Odenigbo did not seem to be ready for the South Florida August Heat. Odenigbo reportedly left practice early to cool down in the ice bucket.
