Miami Hurricanes linebacker Sam Brooks is expected to enter the transfer portal per a report from Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald on Wednesday. As previously reported, LB Tyler Johnson is also expected to transfer. Brooks has 59 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and two pass breakups in three seasons.

Injuries have slowed Brooks’ career. Brooks’ best season was 2020 when he had 37 tackles, 1.5 TFLs, one sack and two PBUs. Brooks and Johnson did not participate in spring practice. Brooks signed with the Miami football program in 2019 as the 750th player, 52nd outside LB and 96th in Florida.

Miami has added UCLA transfer, LB Caleb Johnson, during the offseason. Johnson is projected to start at MLB. Miami has added 11 transfers to the 2022 roster. The Hurricanes have lost 10 transfers since the end of last season. The includes LBs Tirek Austin-Cave and Deshawn Troutman in addition to Brooks and Johnson.

Four-star 2022 signee Wesley Bissainthe is the only LB in the 2022 Miami Hurricanes class. Brooks was a three-star signee. Avery Huff was a four-star signee who was in the 2019 class with Brooks. The first season for Brooks and Huff was the last year of four-year starting LBs Michael Pinckney and Shaq Quarterman.

Miami has failed to develop consistent play from its LBs since Pinckney and Quarterman graduated. Caleb Johnson will hopefully stabilize the LB play for Miami in his one season with the Hurricanes in 2022. Bissainthe is expected to be the future for Miami at LB. Miami hired Charlie Strong as the new LBs coach.

Strong is expected with his co-defensive coordinator Kevin Steele to better develop and upgrade the LB play for Miami. Brooks and the Miami LBs who transfer will have the opportunity to start over with another program. Expect Miami to target LBs in the future with freshmen and continuing through the transfer portal.
