Miami Hurricanes News: Cavinders’ decision, FB players speak with media
Haley Cavinder tweeted on Tuesday morning that she and her twin sister Hanna have decided to forego their final season of college basketball to pursue other opportunities. Seven freshmen on the Miami Hurricanes football team spoke with the media for the first time after practice on Tuesday.
Haley Cavinder was a key player for the Miami basketball team this season leading the Hurricanes in scoring averaging 12.1 points per game and was second in assists and third in rebounds. Hanna was a key contributor off the bench. Expect Katie Meier to be aggressive in the transfer portal to add depth to the roster.
Defensive lineman Rueben Bain and Jayden Wayne, offensive linemen Francis Mauigoa and Samson Okunlola, tight ends Jackson Carver and Riley Williams and wide receiver Nathaniel Joseph had their first opportunities to speak with the media on Tuesday. Some variation of the seven will contribute as true freshmen.
David Lake of Inside the U summarized the comments from all of the players who spoke to the media on Tuesday. Players discussed adjusting to college, leaving behind their recruiting stars, the chemistry the early enrollee freshmen are creating and adjusting to the speed of playing at the next level.
The Miami Hurricanes offense will be tested in three games this season by projected top 10 defenses. Robbie Weinstein of 247 Sports ranked Florida State fifth, Clemson sixth and Texas A&M seventh in his “College football’s 10 best defenses, projected for 2023 season: SEC powers reign.”
Former Miami guard Harlond Beverly tweeted on Tuesday that he is transferring to Wichita State. The tweet came one day after it was revealed that Beverly was transferring from Miami. Beverly contributed as a reserve this season but injuries plagued him throughout his Miami career.
Nick Schultz of On3 is the latest national writer to name Mauigoa among the “True Freshmen to Watch in this week’s Spring Game action across College Football.” Mauigoa and Okunlola were previously named by 247 Sports among 10 freshmen to watch this spring. Miami’s spring game is Friday at DRV PNK Stadium.
