Running back Mark Fletcher was named a “True Freshman Standouts from Week 1 of College Football” by Charles Power of On3 on Tuesday. Fletcher shared the RB duties with 2022 Henry Parrish who led the Miami football team in rushing in 2022, redshirt Nebraska transfer Ajay Allen and fourth-year sophomore Don Cheney Jr.
Fletcher provides the Miami football team with the size they were missing at RB in 2022 at 6’2 and 225 pounds. Allen, Fletcher and Parrish each had nine carries in the 38-3 win over Miami (Ohio) on Friday. Miami freshman offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa was named a “notable newbie” by Chance Linton of 247 Sports.
Fletcher and Mauigoa were two of the 15 true freshmen who played for the Miami football team on Friday. Expect Fletcher and Mauigoa to continue to have an impact throughout their true freshmen seasons in 2023. Allen, Fletcher and fellow freshman Chris Johnson will set the foundation for future Miami RBs.
Fletcher praised the Miami offensive line as unstoppable when he spoke to reporters after the win over Miami (Ohio). If he continues to contribute as he did versus Miami (Ohio), Fletcher should be one of the best freshmen in the ACC with Mauigoa. Fletcher could play a key role versus Texas A&M on Saturday.
"RB Mark Fletcher – Miami“Mark Fletcher joins Dylan Edwards (Colorado) as two former blue-chip running backs who impressed in their college debuts. The 6-foot-2, 225-pounder was a big get for Mario Cristobal and staff and is already making plays on the ground for the Hurricanes.Fletcher had a strong outing in Miami’s 38-3 win over Miami (Ohio), rushing for 76 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. His touchdown came on a 26-yard rush on Miami’s first drive of the second half."
Edwards finished with six carries for 24 yards and a touchdown. Fletcher is fourth nationally among freshmen in rushing yards and sixth in yards per carry after week one. Sharing the carries with Allen, Chaney and Parrish will be a challenge for Fletcher to compete to earn freshmen All-American.
It took Fletcher several carries to gain momentum versus Miami (Ohio). Fletcher had five yards on his first three carries in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Fletcher had three carries for 35 yards. Fletcher seemed to get strong as the game wore on. On his final three carries, Fletcher gained 36 yards and a TD.
