The Miami Hurricanes identified Amir Sears as their top target in the 2028 recruiting class a long time ago, and now it seems like the college football recruiting websites have come around. Sears, a five-star athlete, is now rated as the No. 1 player in the 2028 class according to 247Sports.Â
Mario Cristobal and staff have been aggressive in their pursuit of Sears and there are questions if Sears will stay in the 2028 class or reclassify to the 2027, which would change the overall landscape, especially when it comes to NIL packages.

Top target Amir Sears ascends to the top spot in 247Sports rankings
Sears has been on the Miami campus numerous times and at Hurricanes games since he was a freshman. If Sears were anywhere in the country, Miami would be greatly interested in him, but the fact that he's a local prospect means Cristobal is going to take an even greater interest in recruiting him. The other two programs that are often mentioned in Sears' recruitment are Syracuse and Texas A&M, who seem to be targeting players in the Hurricanes' backyard.Â
Besides location, there are a few other advantages that the Hurricanes hope to have in Sears' recruitment. The elite two-way athlete transferred to Columbus High School earlier this year, which is the same place that Cristobal played prep football. The Columbus community is a very tight-knit one and one that has been instrumental in helping Cristobal with his success at Miami.Â
Sears has some close friends on the Hurricanes roster. He has a close friendship with Malachil Toney and Bryce Fitzgerald, who also played at Columbus. It wouldn't be a surprise to see either player stop by Columbus High to catch one of Sears' games this fall. The fact that an All-American like Toney is putting the bug in Sears' ear about joining him at Miami is a big deal.
But, as we've found out in the past few days with Mark Matthews, location and relationships alone won't get it done. It's probably safe to say that Miami is the favorite for Sears, but that recruitment has a long way to go. So expect Cristobal to stay in this one until the scholarship papers are signed.Â
