The ACC announced its 2027 football conference opponents on Wednesday, moving into the second year of its nine-game scheduling model.

Every team except Clemson will play nine conference games. The Tigers will play eight, along with at least two Power Four non-conference opponents, which is a requirement tied to the ACC's 10-game Power Four minimum. Clemson already has Notre Dame and South Carolina on the non-conference slate and the Tigers' SOS is usually one of the best in the country because of games like those.
Miami will play four conference games at Hard Rock Stadium and five on the road. The Hurricanes will host Cal, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Virginia, and their road slate is Duke, Florida State, NC State, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech.
ACC announces football schedule for 2027
This format exists because the ACC has 17 football members, and that obviously makes it impossible for every school to play nine conference games in the same season. 16 teams play nine league games and one plays eight each year so the math works out.
Clemson also has the eight-game slot in 2028, while Georgia Tech is scheduled for that rotation in 2029 and 2031, Syracuse in 2030 and Florida State in 2032.
The 2026 season is the transition year for the ACC, where 12 teams will play nine conference games and five teams (Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Boston College), play eight because of existing Power Four non-conference contracts.
With all of this new information, some fans can't help from wonder and ask: Why not just get an 18th team?
The ACC went through a ton of chaos last year in the conference championship hunt, this year it won't be fixed, and starting next year there will be one team every season that plays one less conference game than everybody else.
Adding an 18th football team would be difficult, and maybe that spot is reserved for Notre Dame (no matter how unlikely that seems to be). But with so many teams, and well into the NIL era, the ACC is still struggling to have a respectable conference operation.
At the end of the day, Clemson is playing some great out of conference squads, but it makes the ACC leaders look like they are struggling anytime scheduling is discussed.
