Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur extensively discussed third-round pick Carson Beck's experience and future during an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show on Tuesday. Beck will compete with returning starter Jacoby Brissett and free agent signee Gardner Minshew for snaps in 2026.
LaFleur began his assessment of Beck, stating he could begin with Beck's physical traits. Arizona likes Beck's "the size and the natural throwing ability. I think he's tough in the pocket, but there's two things that really stuck out to...all of us in this building."
Discussing Beck's experience, LaFleur said "the experience that he's played....not just...the amount of games of 43..37-6 as a starter...he did it in the SEC, then he did it down at Miami. And you know, you think about the run that they made...he helped lead that team get there. So, you know, he's he's won a lot of games at at a high level."
The uncertainty of Miami initially getting into the College Football Playoff and the run the Hurricanes made with wins at Texas A&M and two more victores getting Miami to the National Championship Game also impressed LaFleue.
Beck overcoming adversity
LaFleur was also impressed by Beck overcoming adversity throughout his collegiate career, "it hasn't been smooth sailing for him...There's some armor..throughout his career...I love that because it's not like it was all easy and the number one pick...He's already been through some stuff and so when he gets to the league...it's only going to get harder, no doubt."
Asked if Beck would be in a competition with Brissett with Minshew, LaFleur said, "We just want to teach him the playbook....Yesterday, we started with the cadence and formations...Before there's even a rep to be had on the field, we got to teach these guys, not just him, but Gardner and uh and Jacoby as well...There'll be plenty of reps to be had throughout."
