Carson Beck joins running backs Frank Gore, James Jackson and Woody Thompson and linebacker Bernard Clark as the 65th overall pick in the NFL Draft on Friday night. Beck was chosen with the first pick of the third round, 65th overall, by the Arizona Cardinals.

Beck will likely have an opportunity to compete to be the starter with Arizona. After trading 2019 number one overall pick, Kyler Murray, to the Minnesota Vikings during the offseason, Arizona has Jacoby Brissett, Gardner Minshew II and Kedon Slovis at QB with Beck on their roster.

Thompson was selected with the 13th pick in the third round by the Atlanta Falcons in 1975. In three NFL seasons, all with Atlanta, Thompson ran for 877 yards and one touchdown and had 42 receptions for 259 yards. In three seasons at Miami, Thompson ran for 1,338 yards and 11 TDs.

Clark is known for being the 1988 Orange Bowl Most Valuable Player after recording 14 unassisted tackles to lead Miami to a 20-14 win over Oklahoma and the only National Championship under Jimmy Johnson. Cincinnati selected Clark in the third round in 1990 and he only played two seasons in the NFL.

Record setting Running Backs

Before being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the 2001 NFL Draft, Jackson ran for 2,953 yards in his Miami career, now fourth in Hurricanes' history. Most of Jackson's 1,082 NFL rushing yards and all of his five TDs on the ground, plus most of his 32 receptions for 232 receiving yards, occurred in 2001 and 2003.

Gore is the most accomplished Miami alum in NFL history. In 16 NFL seasons, Gore ran for exactly 16,000 yards with 81 TDs and had 484 receptions for 3.985 yards and another 18 scores. Gore is third all-time in NFL history behind Emmitt Smith and Walter Payton in rushing yards.

Gore is the only Miami player drafted 65th overall who had an accomplished and long NFL career. Beck has an opportunity for a long NFL career with the potential foundation for a good start with Arizona. Beck already has a win at State Farm Stadium over Mississippi in the Fiesta Bowl College Football Playoff Semifinal in January.
