True freshman safety Bryce Fitzgerald had two interceptions on Saturday to help Miami secure a 10-3 College Football Playoff first-round win at Texas A&M. Fitzgerald drew praise from Miami head coach Mario Cristobal after the win over Texas A&M.
Fitzgerald returned his first interception 36 yards in the third quarter to set Miami up at the Texas A&M 20-yard yardline. After Miami went three and out, Carter Davis missed a 35-yard field goal that would have extended the Hurricanes' lead to 6-0.
The second interception by Fitzgerald sealed the Miami win. Texas A&M drove 70 yards in 10 plays over 1:20, putting the Aggies in position to tie the game. On third and goal from the Miami five-yard line, Texas A&M quarterback Marcel Reed attempted a pass to Theo Melin Ohrstrom.
Fitzgerald stepped in front of the pass in the end zone and got the interception to secure the game for Miami with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Miami quarterback Carson Beck took a knee and the Hurricanes escaped College Station with their first CFP win.

“He spends every minute studying, and when the lights come on he’s one of those guys that have it”
“We’re really proud and looking forward to more great play”
""He's a quick study...He's never flinched. He spends every waking minute studying, but when the lights come on, some guys just kind of have 'it.' He's that guy. He just knows what to do and how to do it.""Miami head coach Mario Cristobal
Among the national leaders
Fitzgerald leads all freshmen nationally and is second overall with six interceptions in 2025. Fitzgerald also had interceptions against Bethune-Cookman, South Florida, Florida State and Pittsburgh in 2025. The Fitzgerald interception at FSU was a 44-yard return that set up a Miami touchdown.
Fitzgerald has also contributed 15 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, 1.0 sack and two passes defended and two QB hurries in 2025. With defensive backs Keionte Scott and Jakobe Thomas in their last season of eligibility, the future is bright for Fitzgerald.
