CBS Sports' post-spring bowl and College Football Playoff projection has Miami as the No. 1 overall seed in the 12-team bracket, with the Hurricanes slotted into the Peach Bowl quarterfinal against the winner of No. 8 Ohio State and No. 9 LSU. That would give Miami a first-round bye and place the Hurricanes two wins from a return to the national championship game.

Miami gets the top spot in post-spring CFP projection

"After reloading in the transfer portal with several elite signings, including Duke quarterback Darian Mensah and former Missouri pass rusher Damon Wilson II, Miami could have its best team overall in the CFP era. The Hurricanes' showdown at Notre Dame on Nov. 7 is the only matchup in which Mario Cristobal's squad might be an underdog this fall."
Brad Crawford

The projection revolves around Miami retooling in the offseason and replacing the production that left in the NFL draft. With QB Darian Mensah from Duke, WR Cooper Barkate from Duke, EDGE Damon Wilson II from Missouri and others, Miami is in position to improve on the CFP run from last year.

The Hurricanes open at Stanford on Sept. 4, travel to Wake Forest on Sept. 18, visit Clemson on Oct. 3 and go to North Carolina on Oct. 31. They also host Florida State on Oct. 17, Pittsburgh on Oct. 24, Duke on Nov. 14, Virginia Tech on Nov. 20 and Boston College on Nov. 28.

The biggest regular-season game is the Nov. 7 trip to Notre Dame.

The playoff setup for 2026-27 season

The CFP format will remain at 12 teams for the 2026-27 season, but the future format is still being debated.

The American Football Coaches Association's Board of Trustees is expected to support a 24-team College Football Playoff model and the elimination of conference championship games, with the goal of ending the season earlier in January. The AFCA's support adds another influential voice to a debate that continues on.

The most-discussed 24-team model would use an at-large bracket based on CFP rankings, include an automatic berth for the Group of Six and put seeds 9-24 in first-round campus games.
