Just a few days ago, the Miami Hurricanes and quarterback Carson Beck had their worst showing in a long time as they were upset by the unranked Louisville Cardinals.
With four interceptions and zero touchdowns, Beck was largely, if not entirely, to blame for the Canes' loss. This week, as Miami takes on the Stanford Cardinal, who just defeated the Florida State Seminoles, Beck has to respond to his bad game with a great one.
Don't worry, the Cardinal is the perfect opponent for Beck to have his "get-right" game and put the Hurricanes back on track.
Stanford defensive struggles are still there
Even with the win over the Seminoles, there are clear holes in the Cardinal defense. Nationally, the team ranks 95th in defensive success against the pass and 61st against the rush. Meanwhile, Beck has averaged over 247 passing yards per game, including in the loss to Louisville.
Stanford ranks 113th in EPA (expected points added) against passing plays and 64th when faced with stopping the run. Simply put, the Cardinal defense is far from good, especially against the pass.
Beck has to take advantage of Stanford's shortcomings in the defensive secondary, a group that has only produced 26 pass deflections and one interception over the first seven games of the year.
"I think he will respond well," Miami head coach Mario Cristobal said about Beck bouncing back after last week's loss. "There is no other way. There is no other choice... Lessons have to be learned, and we have to do something about it. Talking about it ain't going to do anything."
Yes, Beck more than doubled his interception count in Miami's loss to Louisville, but he has the perfect opportunity to right his ship, which only went slightly askew for one week. The Hurricanes are still a top-10 team with a Heisman-worthy quarterback holding the reins.
No. 9 Miami (5-1 overall, 1-1 ACC) and unranked Stanford. (3-4 overall, 2-2 ACC) are scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, Oct. 25, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
